1) This Thomas Edison short may very well be the very first example of a filmedadvertisement. The 28 second film shows a cross section of men (includingan Indian Chief and someone who looks like Uncle Sam) sitting in front of abanner that says (what else?) Admiral Cigarettes. A lady appears and dropsdozens of cigarettes in front of them. The men unfurl a banner which reads"We All Smoke".

Okay so it is politically incorrect by to-days standards; this discovery ofthis 106 year old film shows that product endorsement went back as far asthe moving pictures themselves!

2) Early filmmakers understood the advertising potential of motion pictures.By1897, several NY film companies had made advertising films for variousproducts and services. Admiral Cigarette was one of the earliest Edisonadvertising films. Although previous Edison films promoted rail travel andwere often financed by railway companies, films like Admiral Cigaretteweremuch more explicit in their endorsements of brand names.

This film is very exciting to watch as it shows advertising at itsinfancy. This ad shows a group of people displaying a banner that proclaims — "WeAll Smoke." Not bad for 1897.

3) Admirall Cigarette (1897)

**** (out of 4)

On a historic level alone this is a rather marvelous film because itshows the early use of films to advertise for various companies. Thistime out its Admirall Cigarettes. In the film we see four men sittingaround as another jumps out of a box and starts throwing cigaretteseverywhere. The four men then hold up a sign saying "We All Smoke."Even though this is what would become product placement, the filmmanages to still be very charming in its own right. According to whatI've read, Edison would show these films on New York rooftops, which ofcourse would gather hundreds of people, if not more. Rumor has it thatEdwin S. Porter was arrested for blocking traffic while showing thisfilm.

4) Once again, the Internet Archive site has some of the most historicallyfascinating pieces of film that dates back to the beginning of motionpictures themselves! The title is also the name of the product that'sblatantly advertised on both a billboard that's the background of fourmen sitting on a bench having a conversation and on a giant cigarettepack that's standing to the left of them. Suddenly, someone emerges outof that pack and offers all of those men some of the product. Then, those four men unfurl a sign that says, "We All Smoke". The end. Thisearly commercial (in fact, probably the earliest) was actually a movingbillboard that was displayed on top of one of the New York buildings. It caused such a commotion that projectionist Edwin S. Porter was laterarrested for causing a "disturbance" in traffic. Ironically, ThomasEdison would later be a rabid anti-smoker who would not hire anyonethat partakes in the substance. Maybe he realized how unhealthy smokingreally was. Admiral Cigarette is a fascinating document of early motionpicture advertising that's worth a look for anyone seeking suchrarities.

Plot:
1) A group of people are shipwrecked when their yacht runs around on a South Pacific island. The usable hierarchy in a upper-class British family breaks down quickly when it becomes apparent that only the servant Crichton is capable of surviving on his own and he becomes the communities leader.
Comments:
1) James Barrie’s literary fame has never disappeared, but it has shrunkterribly. Although of late this seems to be changing, in reality it isstill grounded on one work of his. He wrote the novel and then the playPETER PAN, immortalizing Peter, Wendy, her brothers, the lost boys,Captain Cook, Smee, the pirate crew, Tiger Lily and the Indians, andTinker Bell the fairy. The recent film about how Barrie created theplay was a success last year – but it remains firmly in place dealingwith the one story everyone recalls Barrie created.

Forgotten, of course, is the various novels about Scottish life thatgave him his early literary reputation. Best of these was THE LITTLEMINISTER, which was turned into a successful early movie with KatherineHepburn. He also wrote other successful West End plays, such as DEARBRUTUS (which was an early starring work for Helen Hayes), and thisplay: THE ADMIRABLE CRICHTON. Yet Barrie’s plays (pace PETER PAN) arerarely produced – especially on television.

The original "Admirable Crichton" was a figure in Elizabethan England, who had made a name for himself as a scholar (especially of languages),courtier, lover, minor writer, and adventurer, before he was killed ina fight in the late 16th Century. Ironically the term "the admirableCrichton" which was to complement the man for his achievements survivedhis actual achievements, so that he is but a footnote today. But thephrase now means (when it is used) that the person to whom it isapplied is quite a clever and capable fellow in several fields.

Barrie took this to examine society and it’s hypocrisy. Lord Loam(Laurence Naismith) is an outspoken "Liberal" peer of the realm whotalks a great deal about equality and democracy. But his daughter(Virginia McKenna) is going to be married to another aristocrat soon. But first Loam and his family are going on a short vacation to thesouth seas. With them is the family butler, Crichton (Bill Travers),who is extremely capable to do all sorts of things that his bettersjust take for granted. He has good executive and organizationalabilities as well. But he is from a class that produces butlers. Moreover he is supposedly engaged to one of the parlor-maids.

The family and Crichton board a chartered yacht. Ah, but it is sunk ina collision off a deserted island, and while everyone survives thesocial order does not. Crichton is the only one in the group who knowshow to survive. When some of the men try to put him in his place, heknocks them down firmly putting them in theirs. Soon Crichton is rulingthe group and the island, and his Lordship and the others are hisvassals. This includes Lady Mary (McKenna) who finds she and Crichtonare in love. The turning point comes when their is a possibility ofrescue: will Crichton send the signal or let it pass to continue hisuninterrupted reign over his mental inferiors.

It was only shown once, and I recall the performances were good, especially McKenna and Travers (fresh from their film triumph in BORNFREE). One hopes it is released again one day – revivals of all ofBarrie aside from PETER PAN are still quite rare.

The Admirable Crichton

Title: The Admirable Crichton

Writers: J.M. Barrie (play) Lewis Gilbert (adaptation)

Genres: Comedy
Plot:
1) Lord Loam has modern ideas about his household; he believes in treating his servants as his equals – at least sometimes. His butler, Crichton, still believes that members of the serving class should know their place and be happy there. But when the Loam family are shipwrecked on a desert island with the self-reliant Crichton and lady’s maid Tweeny, the class system is put to the test.
Comments:
1) This movie pokes fun at the English class system, using a shipwreckedcast as a backdrop. Kenneth More plays a typically English Butler withplenty of savvy, and reverses roles with his Master, Lord Loam, playedrather nicely by Cecil Parker. More’s character shows wit and somecreativity in adverse circumstances, and is charmingly played. KennethMore looks distinguished in a dinner jacket however on the islandscenes, he actually was photographed from the waist up, to disguise thefact that he was wearing shorts to help him deal with the heat onlocation. Great movie, and one I would very much like to own a copy of.If anyone knows how I might obtain one, please get in touch. My e-mailis firehouse5@gmail.com.

2) Wow what a great film, I can’t believe this isn’t considered one of thegreat classics of all time! More is perfect as Crichton, super-butler (andinspiration for the Red Dwarf character), who takes charge when thenice(-ish) but (very) dim family he serves are shipwrecked. Lots of hilarityin the early stages – (especially the classy dialog between Crichton and theship’s captain – "Will she sink?", "Not unless the engine blows up" (BOOM)"What, like that?" – hilarious), then a really nicely worked role-reversalsequence after they have settled in to their island paradise (although thewhole "guv"-"daddy" thing sounds a bit strained and weird). Some interestingideas about people’s roles in society, the importance of leadership andheirarchy, in a gorgeous looking movie, with beautiful people in lovelyperiod/desert island clothing, stunning scenery and a great beachhouserivalling Swiss Family Robinson’s. All the characters blossom under the sunand question their own attitudes and status in life, and show some reallyeye-opening attitudes (for the time) as the blokes start getting frisky.Poor little Tweeny’s predicament nearly had me in tears! Looks like it’sheading for a sad ending but works out almost lovely, a really enjoyable, heartwarming adventure/romance yarn with a nice chunk of social commentaryand toff-bashing thrown in. Thoroughly recommended to anyone who likes a bitof old-fashioned, old-world entertainment now and again.

3) What a delightful comedy of a type we are not likely to see made today.Although almost 50 years old, it hardly crowds the boundaries of politicalcorrectness, certainly does not trample them – not easy to accomplishtoday.

Crichton, the title and leading character, having achieved the proudposition of being an English butler, demonstrates very clearly to us thatthis is a responsible, demanding post requiring many skills.

This delightful character quickly and confidently moves from a VictorianEnglish, aristocratic home where he comfortably serves the English upperclass, to an isolated tropical island where they servehim!

Kenneth More plays this part so well that we never doubt that such acomplete reversal of roles would be possible.

Cecil Parker is wonderful as the seemingly ineffective, yet charmingaristocrat, "Daddy". He completes the change by becoming a reasonableservant – not quite up to the demands of a butler’s position, more like avalet to More’s "Gov" (Governor).

Lightly, yet firmly, poking fun at the class system. With a clear messageof self-worth deriving from talents, skills and effort, rather thanbirth.

The colour, humour, and pace of this movie make it one that the whole familycan watch and enjoy.

4) Whether you read the play in high school as i did, or not… this iswell worth the watch if only to see the fine acting of Kenneth Moore inthe lead role. He should be better known to more North Americansbecause he could be described as "the U.K.’s Jimmy Stewart".

Sure, a "drawing-room comedy" is not to everyone’s taste, but theadditional twist of a batch of castaways (aristocratic family and theirservants) on a tropical island adds much fun. I have not seen this filmin decades but would love to see it again. If only there were aclassics movie channel in Canada! You will certainly never hear thewords "the truth of the matter is…." ever again without rememberingthis hidden gem and recalling their alternate meaning.

5) In 1904 the Loam house is one of the most prodigious in all England. Thehead butler of the household is Crichton, who knows his place and is keen tokeep the staff downstairs despite his labour-voting master’s support of theabsurd idea of all men as equal. On a cruise of the South Seas the familyand Crichton become ship wrecked and the social standards that oncecontrolled the families are no more and the castaways soon realise the valueof a useful man.

I watched this by pure chance and, judging by the number of votes on imdbagainst this title, it appears that few other people have sought this filmout. This is a retelling of J.M. Barrie’s role reversal comedy and, although not without it’s flaws, it is quite an enjoyable and thoughtprovoking tale. The plot is simple in that the film looks at the classsystem in the UK and switches it in a situation where practicality andleadership qualities mean more than birthright. Sadly in the UK we havehistorically had a class system that has decided from birth who you will bewhen you grow up – if you’re father was a Lord then you shall be too and soforth. That is the situation here and it is amusing to it switched when theisland has no such system and eventually everyone settles into one based onmerit and ability rather than birthright.

The film has a few digs at the ruling classes in the final 20 minutes, showing them as pompous and perhaps not as honourable as they should be,meanwhile Crichton lives up to the character given him by the film’s title. It is actually quite sad when the film returns to England because in thisone man you do get to see the crushing and enslaving effect that the classsystem has on those born into the lower reaches of it. The comedy is rarelyhilarious but is amusing throughout – especially before the social switchoccurs. It may feel a little old fashioned now but it is pretty light andenjoyable. If it does have a flaw it is that the jump between social statusis sudden and not phased in slowly – I know the film had limited time but itwas a little hard to swallow all at once. Also, on return to England thefilm loses a little of it’s sharpness and enjoyment value.

Moore is perfectly cast as the unflappable butler Crichton he is perfect butas someone who knows his place, but also convinces as someone whom is a bornleader regardless of birth right. Parker plays Loam spot on and the supportcast are all well played if a little unmemorable in the oddspot.

Overall this is a quaint little film that makes a very good point. Althoughwe are a classless society by comparison to the events in this film, classand birthright still play a big part in deciding what you’ll become in laterlife in the UK. This is an amusing film with still a thoughtfulmessage.

6) The stand out performance in the Admirable Crichton has to be CecilParker. His comic twitches and compromised authority are hilarious. This take on the British class system never has a dull moment: aperfect segue from stage to screen.

Just to see Kenneth More morph into Parker’s role on the island is adelight. And More does make a fine egalitarian ‘gov’!

Australia’s own Diane Cilento and Sally Anne Howes are very well cast.Sally Anne has a wonderful chaste reserve and to see her come out onthe island as self sufficient and loving under the tutelage of More ispriceless.

But tracking down a copy of this film was very difficult. I found anexcellent DVD in America which was the English version, not ParadiseLagoon.

7) I saw this movie in the theater many years ago. I thought it was greatandwould like to see it again. Does anyone know if it ever came out inVideo, and where can it be rented, or purchased?

I thought the interplay between the rich employer and the servant (who hadamuch better head on his shoulders), was priceless.

This is a video that I’m sure I would prize in my collection if I couldfindit.

8) The Admirable Crichton is an adaptation of J.M. Barrie's role reversalplay, taking pot shots at the British class system and starring KennethMore in the title role, it's something of a little treasure. Basicallythe plot sees Butler supreme Crichton become the governor of the desertisland that he, and the toff family he serves, have been shipwreckedupon. The point being that these rich toffs, tho basically good people, are ill equipped to fend for themselves in the cold hard world,Crichton of course is well prepared for this new life forced upon them.He can cook, swim, catch fish, even start a fire, which none of therich folk are capable of doing!. We are of course asked to suspend amodicum of disbelief, i mean there are four sexy babes on this islandand all of them start to fancy Crichton!, yes it's that sort of filmfolks. But it's a real well told story that is acted with fine skill, particularly from More and the infectious Cecil Parker as Lord Loam, whilst red blooded men such as myself get the benefit of some ratherpretty looking ladies, especially Sally Ann Howes as Lady Mary. Theending is never really in doubt, but you know what, in this type ofpicture i didn't want it any other way, highly recommended escapism.7/10

9) A remake of the superior silent version starring beautiful GloriaSwanson and handsome, rugged Thomas Meighan, Male and Female (1919 -available on legitimate DVD off Amazon) this 1957 version pales incomparison to the older film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. This versionstars Kenneth More, Diane Cilento, and Sally Ann Howes as the principalleads, and while they are cute in their roles none of them compare tothe acting abilities of the silent film cast, who gave great subtletyand irony and sexuality to their roles. If a viewer liked this nice butrather weak version of James M. Barrie's classic play then the viewerowes it to himself or herself to see the superior silent version; youwill love it.

One important aspect of this 1957 film that is totally lacking is theunderlying sexual attraction and class friction between Lady Mary andthe butler Crichton, which was displayed quite evocatively in thesilent version. In the remake, Crichton doesn't seem to be aware ofLady Mary at all sexually until they get to the island, he's all eyesfor Tweeny! That wasn't in the original play. In the original play andsilent film Crichton treated Tweeny respectfully but also has somedisdain for her uncultured ways and speech. In the play and silentversion Crichton is much more of a snob himself! Also in the silentversion, Crichton never professes he loves Tweeny, and doesn't kissher. Neither are all the other men attracted to Tweeny on the island inthe silent version or in the original play, though Ernest is brieflyinterested in her in the play.

It seems to me this 1957 version was re-written to give Tweeny (DianeCilento) a much bigger part than her character was in the original playor silent film. This throws the whole film off kilter and takes awayfrom some of its class distinctions and the romantic relationship andforbidden sexuality between Lady Mary and Crichton.

Even more bizarre, in this version there is no overt jealousy betweenTweeny and Lady Mary, no real competition between the two ladies forCrichton! This altered plot device further weakened this version. Inthe silent version Tweeny literally fought with Lady Mary tooth andnail for Crichton's love and attention, which was far more realistic. In the silent version when the wedding is taking place and a rescueboat is seen in the distance Tweeny is triumphant, grabs Lady Mary'sarm and says fiercely, "Do you know what that means, Mary? He's comingback to ME!" There's no equivalent scene like that in the 1957 version. Therefore the rescue doesn't pack the same punch.

The location shoot in Bermuda must have been a difficult one for thecast and crew; it was filmed on a deserted island; whatever modernconveniences they needed they would have had to bring by boat orhelicopter. The water and land and sky shots are pretty and I enjoyedseeing the inventions the group came up with to make their lives easierbefore they were rescued. However the nice location doesn't make up forthe fact that the original story has been considerably weakened forthis version.

My advice: see the silent version, and even more importantly, read theoriginal play by James Matthew Barrie. It's a great classic.

10) Non of the gadgets of a Bond movie and with the innocence of a bygoneera, this story never fails to entertain me. The acting, within theconstraints of the story, was, in the opinion of this amateur, verygood.

The story gives hope for the future in that, in spite of upsets anddisasters that disturb the orderly life of the time, there is a rightand wrong way to correct matters. Politicians have been trying topersuade us for years that they have this insight. If only they hadthen maybe we would be better off. But that would be Utopia wherediligence would be rewarded.

J.M. Barrie certainly rewards the hero's diligence in the tale but notuntil the uncomfortable story line has been unfolded. Kenneth Moore'sCrichton was spot on with showing competent servility and the faultsthat this entails. The cast made a good entertaining yarn an excellentfilm.

1) this early atom egoyan film is truly the best of his movies that i haveseen, and they are "exotica", "felecia’s journey", "the sweethereafter", "speaking parts" and of course "adjuster". egoyan has avery special gift and that is the way he tells the stories, a way thatforces the characters to do things you wouldn’t think they’ll do, or dothem in a very un-expected way. egoyan drives you into the story usingall the tools included in a film director’s case: beautiful, almostdreamy photography, haunting mysterious music, careful attention tomovement and color. that is the case with all his films but in"adjuster" this unique style of his really comes to a peak. the strangestory of an insurance adjuster being eaten inside by guilt and fearseems to take place in a world where morality and good are disappearingslowly, living the honest man to burn is his own hell, created by hisinability to read the reality that lies before him. this is always avery good story material for films, because it allows the filmmaker aninvestigation of the psyche, tormented, searching, afraid and yetunable to tie all ropes together to make sense of the world. irecommend watching "the adjuster" and then watching it again after aday or two. if you dig movies, you will not forget this one. anexceptional experience.

2) The one thing I can always count on from Atom Egoyan is an interestingfilm. This is a brilliant, and very dark, comedy with a sensationally twistedplot, fabulous cast, and great cinematography. Egoyan’s use of light isexcellent, as is the wonderful setting and scenery. This film is soimaginative that it’s beyond a story told on the screen…visual poetry.Andthe frightening thing is that as good as this film is, it’s not even hisbest effort. The pace was a bit slow at times, and at times the plot seemed to stagger abit. His film-making was much sharper in Exotica, which is my personalfavourite. But the plot is so well devised (odd and twisted, and full ofintricate details that are hard to really absorb the first time through)that it makes up for any lack of quality.Elias Koteas is really good in this; his best role save perhaps Fallen, andhe outshines Arsinee Khanjian who didn’t quite feel up topar. My favourite role in the film, however, was a fabulous performance by MauryChaykin as an unbalanced former football player. The gasoline scene is thebest in the film, and Chaykin’s expression and lines arepriceless. As well, look for Don McKellar’s excellent, though unfortunately smallrole,as Tyler (the rookie censor). He’s absolutely hilarious, and his deliveryofdialogue is nothing short of brilliant. All i all, it’s not Egoyan’s best effort, which means it still stands abovemost films. A really good quality indie-film, with a *very* original plot, quirky and memorable characters, and a strong cast. An easy8/10.

3) (I can’t believe the negative comments I have read on this page. I mean, sure, peoples opinions are allowed to differ- thats what makes this world sogreat blah blah blah etc… but this film is incredible and it would be ashame that someone would disregard renting it out on video because someonehad bad-mouthed it here.)

This film is set firmly in Egoyan country. We have dysfunction, we haverecorded media, we have beautiful shots, a wonderful score, great dialogue, fantastic use of silence (watch out for that one) and overall- you can feelan almost religious intensity beaming through the celluloid. My memory ofthis film consists of much more than just a plot- it is the warmth, thecolours that stick with you too. One more thing… Tarkovsky said thatfilms best asset was its ability to sculpt in time. Egoyans measured rhythmis hard to resist (obviously not for some people).

It seems to me though, that the complaints here are not to do with the filmsform. Of course it is well made. They have problems with the script, or atleast the order of things. Well, for me- the chaos and strange order ofthings in this film keeps it gripping- apart from the fact that you neverknow what is going to come next- isn’t this half chaotic order a betterrendition of reality than most? The content is also ’strange’ and notreally in keeping with ‘popular taste’. So if you are easily offended, ormore at home with Spielberg- then please feel free to stick to him. Butthis is brave, sumptious, disturbing, invigorating, and beautiful territory. I was pleased to visit it.

P.S.Elias Koteas’ performance is probably one of my top five favouriteperformances ever, up there with Takeshi Kitano in Bad Cop and ChristopherWalken in King of New York. Stoic, tragic, he hardly puts a footwrong.

4) Words cannot express how much I love The Adjuster. It’s actually been awhile since I saw it, so I picked it up again, and well, fell in lovewith it once again. It’s just that good.

The cast consists of a Canadian dream cast du jour: Elias Koteas! DonMckellar! Maury Chaykin! Arsinée Khanjian! They’re all DYNAMITE here, playing some low down creepy characters here.

Koteas plays the titular Adjuster in the movie, looking after peoplewho’ve lost their houses in a fire. Khanjian plays his wife, who makesa living from being a censor for the government (!!), Don Mckellarplays the new censor that was hired who catches on very quickly how tomove up in the world. I’d rather not get into Maury Chayken’s characterif you don’t mind lol All of these characters intermingle with eachother. There’s not a huge story to be found here, more of a characterstudy. And what a study it is, as you find out a little more about eachcharacter with every viewing, with some mysteries yet to reveal (WhatWAS with the Podiatrist?) Can’t recommend this movie enough. I have tosay this is Egoyan’s crowning achievement, and I’ve been waiting forhim to replicate it. (Instead, he’s been giving us crap like Felicia’sJourney)

5) To respond to a previous review that wrote that the fact that thecensor wife tapes porn from work to show her sister since they shareeverything together isn’t convincing—in the film the wife explains toher boss that she shared what she learned from school to her sisterbecause she couldn’t go to school, and that it is like that from wherethey’re from. Egoyan didn’t specify where they were from, but it isArmenia. The way I see it, I am convinced because it is a matter ofculture and family in a more depraved country, and I got itimmediately, and the fact isn’t that the sisters’ bond is strange, butlike the wife said, it is like that where she comes from. To me, themovie is an extreme dramatization of a man too involved in his work, which in the end destroys his life and family in a climate ofheightened modernity and an inevitable air of danger. In one of thefilm’s most gruesome scenes, a man is masturbating outside the glassslide doors of the living room at night while the wife’s sister iswatching one of the taped porn movies. In another scene, the"filmmaker" greets the family and gives them each an identical jacket, designed like tacky franchises sold in amusement parks. There’s acertain vulnerability about the way the family members take the jacket,as if the scene is trying to express an awkward sorrow about massfranchise and how it’s crudely threw at people and families. What Ifound very, very amused and surprised by is how throughout the film Iexpected, in the end, the obscene couple to be exposed to the familythen shame and explanation could to be provided as punishment for theirdeceit and nightmarish violation—but when the husband finallyconfronts the "filmmaker" while he is about to burn down his livingroom, he is shown as simply, understandably, INSANE.

Their are certain unnecessary or unsubtle little spots of ambiguity inthe film such as the wife’s prior, semi-romantic encounter with herfoot specialist on the subway, but then again, such details and thefilm’s insistence in unpurifying EVERY relationship the adjuster haswith his clients has its own reasons and means of defining and exposingthe main characters that enhances the environment of robbed values thefilm so determinedly tries to create. Atom Egoyan stands out as afilmmaker of "ideas", and in this film as well as most of hisimages/pace/style express a lyrical modernity through a rich andmysterious vision. He is the most interesting provocateur.

6) Atom Egoyan is an absolute genius, but I find it somewhat difficult todiscuss his films as they are so complex. He seems to make the kinds ofmovies where you walk out of the theater after it’s over and all the partsare clear in your head, but you can’t quite piece them all together. But youcan’t help but try. Sooner or later, everything falls into place, andsometimes it doesn’t. Either way, Egoyan makes you really think about a lotof issues.

"The Adjuster" is about an insurance adjuster who helps victims of housefires get money from insurance companies. There is a really great paralleldrawn between the adjuster, Noah, and Robin Hood. He quite frequently shootsarrows with his bow at a billboard sign that says "Sherwood Forest". He isessentially taking money from the rich insurance companies and giving it tothe poor victims of fires. We also have Noah’s voyeuristic wife Hara, who isa film censor for porn flicks. She films what they censor with a videocamera so that her sister can see what she does, as she has always sharedeverything with her sister. There is an extreme sense of bareness of thecharacters lives in the film. This is reinforced by the vast, open, almostdesert landscape around the suburb. They own the only house in thisparticular suburb, and it is in fact a model house. Even the books on thebookshelf inside are fake. All this seems to reinforce the lives that thecharacters live. This is a definite achievement from a cutting edgedirector.

7) Theres so many threads to this movie you have to see it more than once toget the full effect. Elias Koteas gives a subtly painful performance asNoah, as you begin to see just what a complicated life he really has. Hiswife and sister in law are just as multilayered as he is. The themes ofimpulse and denial run throughout the picture, particularly in the filmmakers life where him and his wife act out their sexual phantasies with aminimum of shame. A great work of art by a great director. definitely notmainstream in scope or material. Maybe the quietest movie ever made aboutthe nature of arousal

8) Agree with the previous post.. this film is extraordinary and I'mamazed at the negative reactions here. I would rate it as my favouritefilm of all..

It's an incredible and subtle meditation on what means to be alive, tobe human, to love. To be human and to be confronted by this fragmented, alienating, disturbing modern existence .. with our lives andinteractions largely filtered through technology and our experiences sofar removed from those of our ancestors and those before.

I was provoked and amazed by this piece of work – and I'd urge anyonewho wants to be challenged to see it.

James

9) At the center of Egoyan’s dark journey into moral and materialisticdevastation is Elias Koteas’ Noah, the mortal bearing the film’s title, carrying its weight — certainly delivering the goods in what must beconsidered his finest ninety-plus minutes on film. He never disappointsthisviewer (his cameo turn as "the Kisser" in LaGravenese’s LIVING OUT LOUDwasa landmark in my memory simply as a point of relief, an answeredprayer).

Mychael Danna’s score and Steven Munro’s sound design push THE ADJUSTERpastthe dream world threshold, unraveling it strand by strand to catch andspinin the viewer’s subconscious. This is one you wont shake easily. Egoyanmagic.

10) What a unique and challenging story to work through. The characters areso emotionally unavailable, it is nearly maddening. Even after severaldays since I watched it, I can’t stop thinking about what its purposeis. It requires a second viewing, if one is not too faint of heart. Iloved it, even though I did not understand it all the first time. As arecommendation for all of Egoyan’s work — if you’re all about thequick fix of action-packed entertainment, look elsewhere. If you wantan emotional, suspenseful piece of characterization steeped in a sortof horrid reality, well, this may just be the thing for you. It is abrain teaser. Good luck to all.

*There is also a charming short on the DVD for The Adjuster called "EnPassant". It is worth a gander.

Comments:
1) This short film is nothing short of incredible. Appelbaum has a genuinefilmmaker’s eye and is loaded with talent. Surely, he’s a rising starthat will soon be a Hollywood staple. The tone of the film rings offantastically quaint and daring originality. This originality isparticularly prevalent in the dialect of the voice over- a device whichAppelbaum utilizes to a maximum potential. Although there is nodialogue in the film, the voice over provides ample texture for boththe characters and the plot- and moreover, the voice over does so in adelightfully light-hearted, charismatic manner.

Kim Rome, who plays Ladie, is clearly another rising star. Her charmexplodes off the screen, leaving the audience as addicts to her will. She has a captivating power that I haven’t seen since Betty Davis.

APF, without question, makes me hungry for another Appelbaum/Romecollaboration.
