Comments:
1) Yes, it was a bad sci-fi flick. Yes, it had plenty of bad acting. However, what you might miss is a good representation of the typical uncaring alien(Bravo.. yes, that’s his name) and the science-minded alien (Harper). Theyboth do a good job and it’s actually funny to watch them. I had little tonoempathy for the human victims, in fact watching Bravo get his licks inwhenthe humans got out of line was all too funny. Plus, if you watch the DvD,you can see the three short scenes of some blonde naked woman enjoying herbody as if she was an alien who just started inhabiting it (Yeah, well, ithelped when the movie started getting slow). Overall just a fun campymovieto watch if you’re looking to see something you don’t have to pay too muchattention to or you want a laugh (or both!).

2) This is a very enjoyable TV movie. Yes, it is a low-budget film. But thewriting is strong and the sets are done well. What is nice about thehumancharacters in this movie is that they all act like real people. Each onehas moments of anger and fear, but each also show strong, decent, heroicsides. There aren’t any "weakling" or selfish jerk characters. Theendingis no surprise, but getting there is what counts. And this nice littlefilmdelivers the goods.

3) I’m a big fan of movies that make you think. I’m still thinking longand hard about this one, fully seven minutes after the credits haverolled. What’s really confounding my neurons is the attempt to fathomthe relevance to the plot of the naked girlie fondling her slick oilybody, made extra-tacky by being filmed on cheap video. This happensthree times and I was certain it would be explained in the end. I putmy trust in the film-makers that this lurid attempt to lure viewerswould be justified. It was not.

The movie has to be the most apathetic I’ve come across in the genre. The sets look like a cross between a 1970s Dr Who set and someone’sill-formed idea of a sponge-painted living room. The lighting isunimaginative (if your sets are going to be that bad, at least filmthem in semi-darkness to hide the plasterboard and create someambiance). Of the abducted quartet, the girl stands out as beingparticularly lame, but none of them is given a personality. The aliens’plans for world domination are just plain silly – all they need is abirth control pill and their problems are solved. Most of the movieconsists of people running down corridors. Yes, it really is thatexciting. The "ray gun" special effect is … curious, to say the least(what use is a weapon that takes a 15-second concentrated blast tokill, and even then the guy comes back for more?). The script is like abad episode of The A-Team, and the ladies’ hairstyles come from thesame era, so they look like school teachers instead of an advance teamof murderous alien invaders. When we finally get to see what the aliensreally look like, they’re in suspended animation and never even get outof their boxes. The resolution of the story – traitor alien simply hasa few words with invading fleet commander and without a second thoughthe heads home – is truly the sign of a writer who’s never had an ideamore complex than a Saturday morning cartoon (I mean the bad ones withno plot, action, or characterization) in his or her life.

But seriously, what is with the naked chick?! Was it really just sothey could justify putting flesh on the DVD cover to boost sales?

4) I caught this movie on the Sci-Fi channel, and was pleasantly surprised.Itis somewhat formulaic, but if you are a fan of Sci-Fi in general, you mayenjoy it. I felt that the cast acted quite well, and the special effectswere quite well done for the obviously low budget. All and all, I’m gladIwatched it.

5) While it seemed long and drawn out in a few places, it was put intocontextso that you can understand why it had to be that bland in places. Thealiens were searching for a world to use the bodies for own shells. Eachworld they destroyed supplied the bodies they needed to survive. Theycouldnot stay in their own bodies for long. The use of the new bodies wasnormally only a year long. Their bodies used the energy in their newbodiesso that they would have to recharge their new bodies on a daily basis.Thesigns of courage, caring and self sacrifice demonstrated by the earthlingswas the cause for the saving of the earth. Kept you wondering what wasgoingto happen next and which of the alien examiners would win, the good or thebad.

6) This thing was bad. Really bad. I mean, low budget can sometimes be veryinspiring, but not this. The story was so off-the-shelf, the alien’sbehaviour so illogical, the characters so clichéed. I found nothing good init. And I did try.

7) I didn’t realise this was a "made for TV movie" when I rented the DVD. Evenby that standard this movie is very tedious and cliched. Not to berecommended. I didn’t understand the significance of the naked female thatappears a couple of times at the beginning of the movie. Well, perhaps I donow.

1) Ok well at first I thought this game looked like just another dumb game. When my best friend told me it was one of his favorites I didn’t know whatto expect, but now that I have played it I’ve got to say it’s great. Yougetto buy war things like tanks, planes, soldiers, subs, battleships, andotherstuff. You get to fight other colors it’s an all out war. So if you likewargames this is a game you cannot miss.

2) Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising has to be one of the best Nintendogames out there. Just like the first, Advance Wars 2: Black SturmRising is addicting and fun, and is most likely one of my favoriteseries for the Nintendo DS.

There is a lot of strategy involved. You must command your units acrossthe battlefield to either destroy all your opponents or capture theopponent’s headquarters. (HQ) You decide which place is best to putyour units on, how much money to spend, which CO to use, etc. Your armydepends on you, and your decisions alone.

The game is very complex, but very good too. If you want a goodstrategy game, pick this one up.

10/10

Good: Great strategy game with lots of factors that decide the outcomeof the game. It also has extras, such as maps and COs.

Bad: Difficult at times, and it may be too complex for some.

Comments:
1) With most other games for the Game Boy Advance being ports of previousSuperNintendo titles, it’s very refreshing to see something like Advance Warsgrace this handheld. This game does what few other turn-based strategiescannot, and that is balance the strategy counterpart with simplicity andrelaxing play. The menu system allows for easy navigation and decisionmaking.

Although many strategy fans might complain about the Advance Wars’ lessrealistic Anime twist, the game is more accessible because of it. With amapeditor, plenty of unlockable characters and maps, and multiplayerfeatures, the replay value skyrockets. Advance Wars is an exceptional game thatshouldn’t be overlooked by any Game Boy Advance owner.

2) Advanced Wars lives up to it’s title: advanced.

The game is by the makers of Fire Emblem. It’s a strategy game thatwhere you control multiple units across a vast board.

The game succeeds in its complexity. You have to consider every littledetail if you want to fully succeed such as: the power of your units, the health of your units. how far the can move, the weather, theterrain, and a whole lot more.

I enjoyed the sequel more, simple because it has more to offer, butthis one entertains a lot.

A gem.

Trivia:
  • The steamboat used in this movie was originally built and used as the Cotton Blossom, in M-G-M’s film version of Show Boat (1951). It was also used in Raintree County (1957). In the 1970s, it was one of the props auctioned off by the studio.
  • According to "Gilligan's Island" (1964) creator Sherwood Schwartz, he was having trouble casting the right actor for the part of the Skipper. Several had auditioned (including Carroll O'Connor) but Schwartz couldn’t find the right guy. While he was having dinner in a Hollywood restaurant, he noticed Alan Hale Jr. dressed in a Civil War uniform, having dinner. Schwartz liked what he saw in Hale and began planning on casting him for the Skipper.
Comments:
1) I saw this movie in the basement movie studio of Ytterboe Hall (my freshmancollege dorm — alas now only a memory) when it came out 37 years ago. AfterI got married and settled down, I started scanning the television listingsregularly for it. After 20 years, one of the channels started showing it inthe wee hours so I managed to tape it. ‘Advance To The Rear’ is a rare gem.

This movie was made during the short but glorious window of culturalinnocence (between R & B and the Rolling Stones) when folk music was aspopular as rock. The music is by Randy Sparks and sung by his New ChristyMinstrals. The song ‘Today’ is from this movie.

Stella Stevens, as the Confederate spy, is gorgeous beyond description.Glen Ford plays the bemused hero trying to do things by the book admidst acollection of misfits (‘We’re a company of cowards and we’ve come to savethe day.’). Jim Backus (‘Gilligan’s Island’ and the voice of Mr. Magoo)leads a familiar cast of veteran supporting actors and actresses of the era.Did I mention that Stella Stevens is good looking?

‘Advance To The Rear’ is a B-movie masterpiece. One of those rare examplesof everything coming together perfectly. For those of us who remember theera, it is also very evocative — perhaps more so than any other movie ofits time. It would be nice if whoever has the rights would release it, myVHS tape is getting a little flaky. By the way, they made an LP of the soundtrack. Now that be a major garage sale find.

2) Advance to the Rear is the last of a string of films that Glenn Fordmade with director George Marshall. As an actor/director combination, they don’t rate as high as John Wayne/John Ford or Robert DeNiro/MartinScorsese, but they did turn out a succession of very funny films.

Back at the beginning of Ford’s career, Marshall directed him in Texasalong with another young star Bill Holden. Than it was almost a decadeuntil they worked together again in one of Ford’s best and probablyfunniest film, The Sheepman.

Ford had not done that much comedy up till then. Marshall took greatadvantage of Glenn Ford’s really great gift for deadpanning somefabulous lines. They did five more films after that and Ford used himin his television series Cade’s County. A good director/actor teamturning out some great product.

I think George Marshall’s not been given his due. He was best atcomedy, but could also turn out good westerns. His most noted film,Destry Rides Again is a great blend of both.

Ford is a newly assigned lieutenant in a company that bears a strikingresemblance to F Troop. Possibly this film was the inspiration forsame. After a major snafu, they are assigned out in the west where itis hoped they cannot do too much damage to the Union cause.

And then it’s discovered they are to be protecting a major goldshipment that Confederate guerrilla James Griffith is out to steal.Ford has an additional complication in that he’s fallen for Confederatespy Stella Stevens.

You’ll have a lot of laughs along the way in seeing if and how allthese situations are dealt with. Another performance of note here isMelvyn Douglas as the commanding officer of the company. Douglas, twoyears past his Oscar for Hud, gets a real change of pace and he lookslike he’s having a ball playing the bumbling and pompous ColonelBrackenby.

Watch this one and you’re in for good afternoon’s share of laughs.

3) It is impossible to see this film and not find it intelligently hilarious. You will laugh your way through it and never once feel your time has beenwasted. The premise is simple and, in an odd way, that may in fact be it’sstrength.

During the last days of the Civil War, a contingent of Union soldiers, havemade an uneasy accommodation with their Confederate counterparts stationedafew miles away. Every day at a certain time, each side fires a round ofcannon fire at the other, timed to a deliberate miss. The aim of bothsidesis to, hopefully, last out the war in this manner: reasonably safe andsecure.

This arrangement works quite well, until a brash headstrong Union Captain(played well by Glenn Ford)decides,on his own, to go out and capture a fewof the "enemy". This of course forces their equally reluctant "enemy" toretaliate.

Ford’s Commander,(played with exquisite timing by veteran actor MelvynDouglas) is horrified. "What have you done?" he shouts at him, "take themback! How many times have I instructed you not to show initiative?" Fromthis point on, the humor escalates and never ceases.

Staffed by some of the most recognized character actors of the time, wearetreated to a highly skilled portrayal of an incredibly believableassortmentof military misfits. What makes them believable is that theircharacterizations are delivered with depth. And this, in a sense, makesthemsomewhat realistic and all the more funnier.

This high caliber B-film is well scripted and, to it’s credit, is finallybeing recognized for the cinematic gem that it is. My advice to all filmlovers is to seek out this almost forgotten treasure. Trust me, you won’tbe disappointed.

4) As others are who have studied the long and estimable body of his work,I am a great admirer of George Marshall. The versatile director had anability to tell a story with a camera that was legendary; in "Advanceto the Rear" he found, I suggest, one of his richest hoards ofcinematic possibilities. The story-line of this rare historical comedytakes the viewer back to the final days of the Civil War is winding toan inevitable close; so the commander of one contingent of unionsoldiers has made a separate truce with his Confederate counterpart. Ata prearranged time, a single cannon round, fired to miss, is set off byeach side. And that is their daily war. Period. This life-preservingbut odd arrangement works quite well, until a youthful officer, recently posted to the "Company of Cowards", the name in the originalnovel from which the narrative was extracted, sallies forth andcaptures some of "the Rebs". This precipitate action of course obligestheir equally reluctant "enemies" to do something else, that starts tolook like an act of war. "What have you done?" the union Colonelbellows at him, "Take them back! How many times have I instructed younot to show initiative?" The company depicted obviously bears astriking resemblance to "F Troop"; this film was undoubtedly the modelfor that enjoyable TV series.. After a major mess ensues, the group aredispatched to the West where it is hoped they cannot do too much damageto the Union cause. And then the viewer learns these misfits will haveto protect a large gold shipment that Confederate guerrillas willreally be trying to make away with.. The young officer has anotherthorn in his side; the complication is that he has fallenhead-over-heels for a gung-ho and gorgeous female Confederate spy. Whathappens next has to be seen to be howled at. The actors in thiscolorful comedy-and adventure and romance are under-appreciated GlennFord, the ultra-skilled award-level Melvyn Douglas as the Union colonelin question, Stella Stevens as the well-constructed spy, and a largenumber of very good supporting actors including Jim Backus, JoanBlondell, Whit Bissell, Andrew Prine, Jesse Pearson, Michael Pate, AlanHale, Jr., James Griffith, and many more in smaller roles. The writerscredited with this hilarious screenplay, probably also an inspirationfor "Hogan’s Heroes" included veteran screenwriter William Bowers,Robert Carson, Samuel A. Peeples and Jack Schaefer. The music wasprovided by Randy Sparks, the vivid cinematography by the talentedMilton Krasner. The very fine art direction was done by George W. Davisand George Imazu, with set decoration by Budd Friend and tasteful HenryGrace, with costumes by Walter Plunkett, makeup by the legendaryWilliam Tuttle and hairstyles by Sydney Guilaroff. This is a film whichhas everything I suggest that a comedy could ask for–a strong centralcharacter, a clear set of goals, well- developed characters, humor bornout of situation, character and reaction, and a first-rate productionin the hands of a director who gives every moment its due but neverslows down the pace. Please watch this feature the next time it ispresented; I believe you will appreciate its classic comedy mood asmuch as I do. I suggest it is a one-of-kind comedy although very oftenimitated.

5) Be prepared for something that by almost any standard should not beeven remotely good and find yourself laughing out loud in almost everyplace through it. Mad magazine run rampant, and far better than thelikes of much overrated and obvious stuff like Blazing Saddles. GlennFord walks through it to superb effect. The entire thing looks like itwas all done in one take and is all the better for it.

The James Bond movies were famous for their tongue in cheek humor, always stupidly it seemed to me: this one shows how tongue in cheek allthe way back and down the throat works. Forget John Ford'ssentimentality, Andre de Toth's subtleties, this is just flat out inyour face fun. Never a western before or since like it. One of a kindalways beats the rest.

6) Ford might be simply the nicest actor from the era of his peak activityin movies; I know that daddy Brando and he mutually disliked—but that'sperhaps the only negative thing that can be brought against Ford. Hewas a bright comedy and physical actor—sometimes intriguingly subtleand fanciful.

He could have been an American C. Grant.

'Advance to the Rear' seems a surprisingly timeless and genuinely funnycomedy

It is a joy to see movies and to write about them—provided you're notbashed by disrespectful, less sympathetic persons and hate—mongers—andsometimes it's the greater joy to see them, others to write about them.I confess I'm an ancient person; not quite aged—but ancient, old—as mycompatriot IL Caragiale said it—I'm an ancient fellow, or:–an oldfellow—I'm old, he said. While it just might be useless to say thatADVANCE TO THE REAR is not a perfect movie, and not a perfect comedy,it has nonetheless things that suit me. The cast is ideal—and I mean, ideal—and the execution seems admirable—a military and war comedy, anda sex comedy, accurate fun, in a lighthearted and jolly flick. Thescore simply pleases the ear and the heart. In its core, a new andmodern, a timeless comedy. William Chamberlain's THE COMPANY OF COWARDS(also mentioned in the initial credits' tune) furnished JackSchaeffer's idea—and, subsequently, Peeples & Bowers' scenario; whileMarshall, George Marshall, was the man behind the directorial lens.

Ford plays Heath; the legendary delicious babe Stella Stevens plays aDixie agent; and daddy Melvyn Douglas gives us Brackenby. StellaStevens will be again a witty prostitute in the revisionist Westernclassic CABLE HOGUE.

7) This is one heckuva fun film. Although a pretty descriptive writeup hasalready been given, I gotta tip the proverbial hat to what seems to bethe inspiration for the F-TROOP television series that debuted thefollowing year. And, the use of balladeers, THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS,to help set scenes for the film hearkens unto many a great "tried andtrue" stories of the period…including the legendary CAT BALLOU withStubby Kaye & Nat King Cole as the Balladeers in question.

I am going to have to track this down and plant it near THE HALLELUJAHTRAIL (another good comedy set in the same time period) on my viewingshelf.

The color bearer falls, but the standard is caught up by brave Sergeant Squire and waves undaunted in the smoke and din of the receding battle. This is one of the best battle pictures ever made. The first firing is done directly toward the front of the picture, and the advance of the U.S. troops apparently through the screen is very exciting; the gradual disappearance of the fighters sustaining the interest to the end.”

1) Advance of Kansas Volunteers at Caloocan (1899)

*** (out of 4)

Edison short taking advantage of the Spanish-American war craze. Thefilm, running a short 44-seconds, has the camera looking at someFilipino soldiers who are firing away when an American troop enters theframe and takes them over. This is a very impressive short from thisera that film buffs should really enjoy. There's not too much going onconsidering the time but what's here is pretty impressive in terms ofwhat we see and the action carried out. I was impressed with the shotsbeing fired at the camera and the way the American troops enter theframe was also well done and in some ways way ahead of its time.

Comments:
1) The Les Goldman/Chuck Jones produced Tom and Jerry cartoons made between1965 and 1967 have a very distinct style: garish colors, pouty lippedcharacters, and often using an over-powering, jazzy score by Dean Elliottthat makes ones expect "Shazam!" and "Pow!" to flash on the screen. Thismeans that these cartoons don’t have the "timeless" qualities of some otherTom and Jerrys, but they certainly are fun to watch. "Advance and BeMechanized" is one of the more bizarre, and maybe the plot-line isn’t soclear or logical, but so what? Tom and Jerry are living on the mooncontrolling robot versions of themselves. Tom’s hungry because the onlything the automated cafeteria will serve him is robot oil. How cool isthat? There’s clearly some Jetson’s influence here, but Tom and Jerry’sfuture world is much darker, and if you accept the overall premise, isreally very clever.

Comments:
1) I think that this movie is a mix of everything: `Romance`, comedy, thrillerand a police drama. Karin Viard is really good as Fabienne and for onceVincent Cassel is playing a nice guy. In this movie everyone has good andbad in themselves.

I enjoyed it

2) I had a lot of fun watching this story about adultery, an architecturalproject and drug dealing in Paris. The movie is uneven and silly at times, but overall it shouldn’t be taken very seriously and also offers a coupleofmoderately successful erotic scenes. Great for late nightvideo.

3) This wasn't adultery, it was a day of tension-relief and boredom. Thestreet scenes of Paris were good to see if you want to try andrecognize some not-so-famous spots you've visited. I do have to say thebordello scene almost makes it worth sitting through the whole film.Too bad that scene ended so abruptly and the others dragged on and onand on and on. I found whether the main character's marriage survivedthe day or not hard to feel any interest in. Cassel in the bordelloscene is worth watching just for that feral twitchiness he brings toevery role, but everything else is pretty forgettable.

Who knows what trouble you can get into in Paris in a red suit?

1) "Un adulterio decente" is one of the most original plays by EnriqueJardiel Poncela. The plot twists several times and it is full ofbeautiful paradoxes.

The film has several problems: the main one, they try to make the filmlook modern by using many 1960s artifacts. That makes the film lookdated. It is much better to see the play, but that is seldom possible.

Among the actors, the great Fernando Fernán Gómez plays Cumberri, themain character sustaining the play. Mora de Aragón, a reputed playboyof noble origin, plays the husband, and Carmen Sevilla, little past herheyday, plays the role of a wife whose character seems not to be toofar from hers.
